Latin America and the Caribbean is the region with the highest homicide rates in the planet, after Sub-Saharan Africa. Violence generates direct monetary costs for governments in the region that are equivalent to several percentage points of each country's GDP. However, the negative impacts of violence on economic and social development go beyond these direct costs, and the consequent use of public resources that could be used for education and health. Negative impacts include reductions in labor force productivity, human and social capital accumulation, as well as lower savings and investment rates. The goals of this paper are: describe the status of violence in the region, report negative impacts of violence on the region's economic and social development, and help establish research priorities for future work.
