CRUZ-BELLO, Patricia et al. Gender and self-management of diabetes mellitus type 2 in the State of Mexico. Pap. poblac [online]. 2014, vol.20, n.80, pp.119-144. ISSN 2448-7147.
Diabetes mellitus is a national epidemiological problem, barely analysed by gender studies. Obesity, poor diet and sedentary lifestyle are risk factors for this disease, diagnosed most frequently at younger ages, impacting on the emotional and financial balance of households. Although this disease occurs in both genders the prevalence is higher in women. Cross-sectional study with a non-probabilistic sample of 239 people in two communities in the State of Mexico, to whom after obtaining informed consent, we applied a questionnaire to analyze gender as a risk factor for self-care in type 2 diabetes mellitus. The study unveils the non-clinical factors that may be considered as gender differentials. Prevention considers educational aspects of taking care of themselves with a transdisciplinary approach and incorporating the family for health care for heir beliefs, knowledge and practices.
