We can find precedents of lifelong education policies in the first conferences on adult education held since the fifties of the last century. At present, we have passed from words to facts, and that is why lifelong education initiatives put in the center of the educational and social agendas the consideration of human beings as subjects of lifelong learning. The social benefits of lifelong education which are considered in this essay are benefits in the short, medium and long term and mainly non-monetary. The paper also emphasizes that the importance of lifelong education is going to increase in knowledge grounded societies and is going to produce a genuine educational turn, being a requirement for the transformation and improvement of our world.
