SEPULVEDA VALENZUELA, Leandro. Female students in professional technical education in Chile: Continuity and rupture of an inclusive education. Sinéctica [online]. 2019, n.53.  Epub 28-Ago-2020. ISSN 2007-7033.  https://doi.org/10.31391/s2007-7033(2019)0053-013.

The article covers the problem of gender segregation that characterizes the professional technical education market in Chile. The first section reviews the historical context of professional technical education directed at women, analyzing the tension evidenced in policies until well into the twentieth century, between a modality of education oriented toward employment training and economic autonomy of the students as compared to a formative model oriented toward discipline and preparation of young women for traditional roles related to the home. A second section of the article covers a description of present-day professional technical education (both at the high school level and technical professional education level) considering the variable of gender. It is argued that the differences are not natural and that, in many cases, they do not correspond to choices of either male or female students. Unlike this, the market logic operates as a factor that conditions educational alternatives and options currently. The article ends with a reflection on how socio-cultural factors can reproduce inequalities in the school system, and the challenges for including men and women in this modality of education on an equal basis.
