Various theories, in morphology, syntax, logical semantics, compete to characterize the proper name. However, a semiotic analysis could dispel some false problems: if the proper name is a linguistic symbol (in the Saussurian sense) like any other, it is nevertheless susceptible to be used also as a sign and as an index. This study therefore argues, on the basis of this example, for a semiotic reconsideration of linguistic categories.
