MORENO, Joel E. et al. Metabolic risk and its relationship with aerobic and muscular capacity in young people. Biotecnia [online]. 2020, vol.22, n.1, pp.160-165.  Epub 03-Ago-2020. ISSN 1665-1456.  https://doi.org/10.18633/biotecnia.v22i1.1192.

Metabolic syndrome, characterized as a group of metabolic abnormalities, increase the risk for cardiovascular diseases and type II diabetes mellitus. These diseases have become some of the most important problems in Mexico and the world due to its high impact on public health. The aim of this study was to evaluate the independent relationship of aerobic capacity and muscle strength with metabolic risk factors in young adults. We determined anthropometric, clinical, body composition and biochemical measurements to a total of 12 women and 11 men between 20 and 30 years of age who participated voluntarily, while the evaluation of aerobic capacity and muscular strength was through field tests. Results showed that 30.4 % of the sample had at least one risk factor, while only 4.3 % had two metabolic risk factors. Aerobic capacity and muscular strength did not show significant correlations with metabolic risk factors. The participants showed abdominal obesity, insulin resistance and/or dyslipidemia, which could result in an increased risk of noncommunicable diseases in the medium or long term.

Palavras-chave : Aerobic capacity; muscular strength; cardiovascular and metabolic risk; metabolic syndrome.
