CALDERON SALINAS, José Víctor; MUNOZ REYES, Elvia Guadalupe  e  QUINTANAR ESCORZA, Martha Angélica. Estrés oxidativo y diabetes mellitus. Rev. educ. bioquím [online]. 2013, vol.32, n.2, pp.53-66. ISSN 1665-1995.

Many diseases are associated with oxidative stress, diabetes mellitus is no exception. However, there are few diseases that meet the criteria for being oxidative disease. The study the effects of increased glucose concentration in different models has led to propose that oxidative processes are involved in the pathogenesis, progression, complications and poor prognosis of diabetes mellitus. Experimental data are solid and despite the complex and varied reactions that are induced due to the increased glucose concentration various mechanisms of damage that directly or indirectly involve oxidants and participates in antioxidant status has been established. The overproduction of reactive oxygen species produced by increasing the activity of the electron transport chain, the autoxidation of glucose, sorbitol pathway, the glycation of proteins, advanced glycation products, the excessive expense of reduced cofactors; coupled with the reduction of antioxidant defenses, the capacity of the cell redox buffering capacity antioxidant and generates a pro-oxidant conditions oxidative damage to proteins, lipids, nucleic acids and carbohydrates, all of which can contribute in different ways to development of different disease manifestations of diabetic patients. However, despite advances in models and mechanisms of injury, has not yet had enough solid scientific information that antioxidant treatment is integrated with official recommendations of international agencies in the treatment of diabetes mellitus and its complications.

Palavras-chave : Glycation; sorbitol; respiratory chain; autoxidation; hyperglycemia.
