COUTINO RODRIGUEZ, Elda María del Rocío. Plata Coloidal: Xenobiótico, Antígeno y Disruptor Hormonal. Rev. educ. bioquím [online]. 2015, vol.34, n.1, pp.10-25. ISSN 1665-1995.

In this paper, the author reflects on the concordant and discordant peculiarities of colloidal ions such as colloidal silver, responsible of those particularities because of its oxidative effect. This compound is widely used as a bactericide for fruit and vegetables, therefore, analyzing the possible health implications related to its performance as a xenobiotic, antigen and hormone disruptor is appropriate. The structural characteristics of some unnatural colloids, like colloidal silver (protein compounds and metals), are typical of compounds able to act as xenobiotics (Xbs) and/or antigens, (An). In both cases, they are foreign molecules capable of stimulating chemical and immunological defense mechanisms, and they can be recognized because of the induction of protein synthesis, the enzymatic complex of cytochrome P450 (CYP) or IgG immunoglobulins, respectively, in order to respond by eliminating, neutralizing or tolerating them. The dual role of colloidal silver, xenobiotic or antigen is analyzed considering it as a hormonal or xenohormones disruptor, from the perspective of nuclear receptors, particularly estrogen or steroids, which have a domain rich in cysteines. Due to the natural affinity of metal rich regions for sulfhydryl groups (thiols), an active group of cysteine, these could nonspecifically be the activity centers of the colloids to regulate both functions.
