GUZMAN GAMES, Francisco Javier. Freire in the digital era: Oppression and liberation of indigenous groups using ITC. Innov. educ. (Méx. DF) [online]. 2017, vol.17, n.75, pp.9-27. ISSN 1665-2673.

The introduction of Information and Communication Technologies (ITC) affects the social structure and cultural practices of indigenous populations living in the intercultural regions of the Huasteca and the high mountains of Veracruz, Mexico (Guzman, 2014, 2015, 2017). This research, based on Pedagogy of the Oppressed and Pedagogy of Hope by Freire (2002, 2005), points out the incongruence and equivocality of the Mexican Government’s National Digital Strategy. This article represents two positions: a critical stance, intending to demonstrate the theoretical assumption that ITC are camouflaged instruments of cultural dominance in rural contexts and that the indigenous populations have incorporated digital objects with a sense of ideological and economic alienation that emanates from the capitalist system; and a proactive stance, showing the existence of liberating practices through the digital solidarity among groups that are marginalized from the society of knowledge.
