GODINEZ MONTOYA, Lucila; FIGUEROA HERNANDEZ, Esther  e  PEREZ SOTO, Francisco. The environment, poverty and economic growth in Mexico. Rev. mex. econ. finanz [online]. 2021, vol.16, n.2, e441.  Epub 08-Abr-2022. ISSN 2448-6795.  https://doi.org/10.21919/remef.v16i2.441.

This research seeks to contribute to the discussion and empirical analysis of socioeconomic factors that affect environmental degradation for the specific case of Mexico. The objective was to determine if the economic growth (Real Gross Domestic Product per capita) of the country contributes to the degradation of the environment, and if parallel to the economic activity, the poor population also affect it; Clearly, it seeks to validate the existence of an Environmental Kuznets Curve (CKA-extended) for Mexico during the period 2003-2017; taking as an indicator of environmental degradation the total costs of depletion of natural resources and environmental degradation. Two regression models, one linear multiple and the other polynomial cubic, were estimated using the ordinary least squares method. Based on their estimation, it was found that there is a positive relationship between environmental degradation and economic growth, as well as with the poor population, confirming the existence of the extended CKA for Mexico.

Palavras-chave : Environmental Kuznets curve; gross domestic product per capita; poor population.
