CHAVEZ SEGURA, Alejandro. Religión y relaciones internacionales: Del exilio a la construcción de un modelo internacionalista teológico. Revista Col. San Luis [online]. 2015, vol.5, n.9, pp.180-199. ISSN 2007-8846.

For decades, scholars from the discipline of International Relations (IR) neglected the influence of religious actors in international affairs. The modernist approach to religion-as a factor of underdevelopment, violence and authoritarianism-strengthened a negative perception of the role of religion in society particularly in the public sector. However, the modernist premise was not accurate and thus religion is still a pivotal element to understand social dynamics in developed and developing countries. In this article, through a constructivist-causal approach, I present the impact of the religious factor in international relations and how it can be included in IR studies. The overall goal is to contribute to the discussion of the role of religion in IR, where more scholars are aware of the need to take in account several factors beyond economics and politics for the proper analysis and comprehension of international dynamics.
