SALGADO OCAMPO, Javier. Sickness as a Cause of Marital Separation in Mexico City at the End of the 17th Century. Negotiation, Strategy, and Conflict. Revista Col. San Luis [online]. 2022, vol.12, n.23, 00021.  Epub 27-Maio-2024. ISSN 2007-8846.  https://doi.org/10.21696/rcsl122320221314.

The aim of this paper is to show and analyze the sickness of women as a cause of marital separation in Mexico City at the end of the 17th century. In the text, five cases were analyzed, in which the women accused of being sick, and living apart from their husbands, for the practical reasons they had. It was found that there are four possibilities to interpret the separations caused by sickness, highlighting not to fulfill the marriage model. One of the implications of sickness as a cause of marital separation, was that it was mainly present in elder women, but it was also an option for not to see their husbands. The value of the research is that combines sickness as a cause of marital separation with divorce experiences, which may or may not have been agreed upon; so, in conclusion, a marriage could lived apart because of woman’s sickness, and not for that reason the catholic marriage model could be broken, because it was flexible.
