This article analyzes the implementation of the decree of suppression of the religious houses hospitals of the monastic orders in 1820, and the responses of some segments of the society, the clergy, and the City Council of Mexico to these legislative measures between 1820 and 1822. Also examined are the social, political and economics factors that prevented the ayuntamiento to administer and finance the lay hospitals in those years and delayed the secularization of these institution of public charity.
