JIMENEZ RIBERA, Adrián; GARRIDO GENOVES, Vicente e GARCIA-ALANDETE, Joaquín. Neutralization techniques: effects of speech on violent and criminal behavior. Andamios [online]. 2021, vol.18, n.47, pp.83-112. Epub 17-Out-2022. ISSN 2594-1917. https://doi.org/10.29092/uacm.v18i47.867.
Narrative criminology studies the effects of the speech over the criminal behavior. Its origins can be traced back to neutralization theory, which posits that offenders used different narrative strategies -neutralization techniques- to justify or minimize their behaviors. Many studies signal that neutralizations play an important role in the etiology of crime, but its effects over criminal persistence or abandonment of offending -desistance- are unknown. This work analyzes the differences between the narratives of six individuals with a long violent criminal career: Three of them had already ceased crime in the moment they participated in the interview, whereas d the other three continued.
