CASTANON SUAREZ, Yoana Angélica  e  MAYET CRUZ, María de Lourdes. Teratogenesis caused by retinoids: The case of Mexico. Rev. mex. cienc. farm [online]. 2013, vol.44, n.1, pp.24-32. ISSN 1870-0195.

Retinoids are used orally or topically in the reproductive age for the treatment of acne and damage caused by sunrays, its use is associated with malformations in newborns of mothers who consumed these substances in the first stages of pregnancy. Retinoids are liposoluble molecules and are able to accumulate in adipose tissue, causing malformations even 2 years after being consumed, these malformations could be generated when this substances arrive to the embryo's young cells and they enter to the cell nucleus joining to its receptor (RAR). The complex retinoic acid-receptor can regulate the transcription of several modular genes (HOX). In Mexico no records have been found of voluntary notifications about suspected adverse reactions when malformations occur in newborns, making it difficult to evaluate in the population the incidence of this adverse reaction caused by the use of retinoids.

Palavras-chave : teratogenesis; isotretinoin; retinoic acid; acne vulgaris; regulatory gene.
