The sense of belonging and ownership conveyed by religious and patriotic historical elements is important in several aspects of Latin American studies such as cultural identity, cultural memory, cultural tourism, cultural heritage management and conservation. Complex situation considering they also share bitter yet reconciled histories in collective memories. This article reflects on the case of Jiquilpan, Mexico to illustrate how religious and civic contributions interweave intangible expressions including life stories, songs and dances with material ones such as expropriated religious buildings. The paper also adds that the simultaneous presence of elements can be in symbolic competition in which some heritages can be put at risk.
