SANCHEZ GAYOSSO, Ramiro Daniel  e  ESCAMILLA CADENA, Alberto. The interruption of the presidential mandate in Latin America (1992-2016). Polis [online]. 2017, vol.13, n.1, pp.47-84. ISSN 2594-0686.

This paper addresses a phenomenon that in recent decades has generated political instability in some countries of Latin America: the interruption of the presidential mandate. These events have occurred in nine countries, where fifteen presidents have been removed from office. This modality has presented three possible outcomes: the first was the voluntary resignation of the Executive; the second, the application of a process of political judgment by the Legislative Power; and the third, the combination of both factors. The period of analysis covers 1992 to 2016 and each case is documented. In the end, some political consequences of this phenomenon are considered for the presidential systems of the region.

Palavras-chave : President; destitution; resignation; impeachment; political judgment.
