Assessment of the extinction risk category of the red cedar (Cedrela odorata) in Mexico. Rev. Mex. Biodiv. [online]. 2018, vol.89, n.3, pp.938-949. ISSN 2007-8706.  https://doi.org/10.22201/ib.20078706e.2018.3.2192.

Cedrela odorata is a neotropical species protected by CITES and IUCN. It is considered a species Subject to Special Protection (Pr) in Mexico since 2011 (NOM-059-Semarnat-2010) (Semarnat, 2010a). The Cedrela odorata´s extintion risk category assesment for Mexico was arrived at using the Wildlife Extinction Risk Assesment Method in Mexico (MER, Annex II). A database for geographical distribution of the species in the country, made up of 1,388 single records, was prepared and refined. Based on this database and information about the biology of the species, the score was calculated according to the MER method. The value obtained was 0.87 and the value of criterion D was 0.5. The inclusion of a species in the category subject to special protection (Pr) requires a calculated value: a) ≥ 1.5 and < 1.7, b) ≥ 1 and < 1.5 where the Ʃ of criterion D should be ≥ 0.3. Our results indicate that Cedrela odorata does not meet the required score to be included in any of the risk categories proposed by the NOM-059 (Semarnat, 2010a).
