SANCHEZ-HUESCA, Ricardo et al. El consumo de drogas en migrantes desde una perspectiva de género: Un estudio exploratorio. Región y sociedad [online]. 2006, vol.18, n.35, pp.131-164. ISSN 2448-4849.

In order to identify the differences among drug users, men and women, with migratory experience, we have interviewed six women and three men, all in productive age, and drug users that migrated to the U.S. for at least six months in the past five years. Using focalized interviews, it was found that the evolution of drug use and its impact in the users familiar and personal life is characterized for important gender differences. The migratory experience, apart from being signified in a different way for men and women, it had clear different effects in their consumption modalities. While men used drugs in their destination place as a way to evade themselves, and for having more productivity in their jobs, for women there is not a common pattern about the way in which the migratory experience is related to consumption. Besides, it was noticed that heroine, cocaine and crack have a more destructive effect on women, who in addictive stages tend to steal, prostitute themselves or sell drugs in order to afford their addiction.
