Mexico has a deforestation rate of almost 600,000 hectares per year. One of the most important causes is related to the promotion of a livestock development program that has ignored the environmental impacts. In this article we identify some of the existing links between programs like Alianza para el Campo and Estímulos a la Productividad Ganadera and deforestation trends by the opening of buffelgrass prairies (Pennisetum ciliare) in Sonora, and we suggest modifications to the current environmental laws to regulate this phenomenon. We also propose ways to evaluate the environmental performance of subsidies programs related to deforestation, and also to improve sectorial strategies for livestock development.
