VALDEZ-GARDEA, Gloria Ciria; OCHOA O'LEARY, Anna  e  GONZALEZ, Norma. El trabajo flexible y la poca inversión en la educación de las mujeres en la frontera México-Estados Unidos. Región y sociedad [online]. 2011, vol.23, n.50, pp.23-54. ISSN 2448-4849.

Over the past 40 years, industry at the border has opened employment opportunities for women in the community of Nogales, Arizona. Notably, the expansion of free trade through agreements between the U.S. and México has deepened economic instability due to the use of flexible labor, a practice in which women are participating more actively This article presents case studies of women engaged in the retail and maquiladora labor markets. These cases help emphasize the relationship between flexible labor, household reproduction and education. It's argued that the increase in flexible job offers complements sociocultural mandates that emphasize the reproductive role of women. Therefore, the combination of flexible job offers and cultural mandates generally counteracts the acquisition of education-which eventually would lead to greater human capital development and economic stability in the household.
