GONZALEZ SALINAS, Omar Fabián. GENDER AND CITIZENSHIP IN MEXICO. THE FIRST PARTICIPATION OF WOMEN IN A PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION, 1958. Tzintzun. Rev. estud. históricos [online]. 2022, n.75, pp.153-180. Epub 08-Ago-2022. ISSN 2007-963X.
This article analyses the connection that was established between citizenship and gender during the presidential election of 1958, the first one in which women were able to vote to elect a president. The paper argues that the most common discourse among the government, the press and society, was to appeal to a conservative stereotype of women that insisted that their only field of competence was home and family, which caused women´s vote to be downplayed and even trivialized. The research methodology consisted in taking gender questions to delve in political history. The main sources were documents from presidential archives, published speeches, and newspapers from political parties and everyday journals.
