The Regional Zoological Collection (Birds) of the Natural History Institute of Chiapas, Mexico, preserves 7,173 specimens of 17 orders, 68 families, 339 genus, and 575 species. Most of the specimens come from Chiapas (72.4%), Oaxaca (15.4%), and Veracruz (10.8%). Families with the largest number of specimens are Parulidae (1,432), Tyrannidae (823), Trochilidae (709), Thraupidae (371), and Emberizidae (343). Ninety percent of specimens are skin preserved, 8% are anatomical, and 2% are skeletons. The collection preserves 126 species included in the Mexican red list (10 endangered, 41 threatened and, 75 under special protection). Physiographic regions of Chiapas better represented with specimens are the Sierra Madre de Chiapas, the Pacific Coastal Plain, the Eastern Mountains, and the Northern Mountains. Despite its regional importance, scientific publications resulting from its analysis has been limited. Thus, it is necessary to promote its use by researchers and students interested in distribution, natural history and ecology of birds in the south-southeastern region of Mexico.
