RODRIGUEZ-RUIZ, Erick Rubén et al. New sightings of birds in Tamaulipas, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2012, vol.13, n.2, pp.162-168. ISSN 1870-7459.

The bird checklists and species records contribute to the knowledge of the composition of bird communities and help in the understanding of ecological relationships in the ecosystems. In this study we gathered five outstanding records of bird species from 2005 to 2011 in the municipalities of Altamira, El Mante, González, Jaumave, Madero, Matamoros, Miquihuana, and Soto La Marina, in the state of Tamaulipas. We recorded for the first time the occurrence of Aphelocoma californica and Icterus wagleri in the state, confirming its predicted range by some authors. We confirmed the occurrence of Psarocolius montezuma, by collecting its nest in southern Tamaulipas. We again recorded the occurrence of Falco femoralis in the state, a species considered extirpated. We defined part of the range of Lepidocolaptes affinis in the neotropical limits of the state. Anthropogenic alterations in the ecosystems are some of the main factors that influence the species distributional movements; therefore, it is necessary to increase the sampling efforts to gather records of a larger number of species to have a better and more detailed knowledge of their distribution and seasonality on a regional and local levels, aiming to understand their natural history and ecology on a more detailed level.

Palavras-chave : records; range expansion.
