SANTAMARIA-RIVERO, Waldemar; MACKINNON H., Bárbara e LEYEQUIEN, Eurídice. Nesting records of the Mexican Sheartail (Doricha eliza) in the state of Yucatan, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2013, vol.14, n.2, pp.139-145. ISSN 1870-7459.
The Mexican Sheartail (Doricha eliza) is an endemic species and currently in danger of extinction according to the NOM-059-SEMARNAT-2010. From September to November 2011, we recorded two nests of D. eliza, one in the tropical deciduous forest in the municipality of Chicxulub Puerto, and the second in a grassland in Dzilam de Bravo, Yucatan. We also reported nesting records from previous years in coastal vegetation and buildings. Together, these are the first records of the species nests in the state of Yucatan that are reported in the scientific literature. These records suggest that the range of D. eliza extends to at least 4 km inland including other vegetation types (ie, deciduous forest and secondary vegetation) not previously reported.
