NAVARRO-ARTEAGA, José Luis; ALANIS-MENDEZ, José Luis; HERNANDEZ-SANCHEZ, Mauricio  e  LIMON-SALVADOR, Francisco. Bird inventory from Poza Rica, Veracruz, Mexico. Huitzil [online]. 2021, vol.22, n.1, e604.  Epub 10-Out-2022. ISSN 1870-7459.  https://doi.org/10.28947/hrmo.2021.22.1.488.

Urbanization has spread rapidly, modifying the environments where birds live. Generally, urban environments imply a series of modifications to the surroundings that result in changes in the composition of birds, leading to the need to carry out inventories. The state of Veracruz includes more than 60% of Mexico’s avifauna. There are areas in the northern zone where the knowledge of the avifauna is still deficient. In this study we recorded the richness of the birds in Poza Rica, an industrial city, collate their conservation status according to national and international standards, and identified the species’ residence category. From 2014 to 2017, we conducted an intensive non-systematic search for birds in different sites of the urban landscape and recorded 64 species (in 13 orders and 27 families). Four species (Buteo swainsoni, Cairina moschata, Falco femoralis and Psarocolius montezuma) are protected by national legislation. The richness of birds in Poza Rica was relatively low, probably because of the environmental conditions and its impacts. Finally, we emphasize that urban areas, even if they are small, serve as a refuge for protected species and can be spaces where people can watch, interact with and protect wild birds.
