SANCHEZ-NUNEZ, Juan Manuel et al. Extreme hydrometeorological events and disasters in urban and rural communities in Motozintla, Chiapas. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2011, vol.2, n.spe2, pp.167-181. ISSN 2007-0934.

Global climate change along with El Niño-Southern Oscillation (ENSO); have brought a number of mismatches in the patterns of several natural processes, mainly in the hydrological cycle. As a manifestation of these disorders, various phenomena have been intensified: prolonged droughts, torrential precipitations, flooding and excessive moisture in the environment, among the major ones. The impact may occur at different scales both global and regional level but, in any of these, the impacts are generally negative, as in the case of the hydrometeorological phenomena that affected most of the southern Mexico. This paper describes the ecological and social problems generated by the hydrometeorological phenomena occurred in the community of Motozintla, Chiapas, Mexico. Starting with the consideration that, this event was originated due to the global changes occurred during the indicated year, joint with the characteristics of its location in the mountain region of Chiapas State. An analysis of rainfall occurred in the area is presented, identifying the peak periods, the type of flows generated by the hydrometeorological event and the effects caused in the agricultural sector as well as in the urban area at the head of the Motozintla municipality.
