CHAVEZ VILLALBA, Gabriela et al. Tepahui F2009: bakery bread wheat variety for northwestern Mexico. Rev. Mex. Cienc. Agríc [online]. 2015, vol.6, n.2, pp.427-430. ISSN 2007-0934.

In the last 5 agricultural cycles (2008- 2009 to 2012- 2013), the average wheat area in the state of Sonora is 291 547 hectares (OEIDRUS, 2013). Bread wheat occupies 20% of the area planted mainly with Tacupeto F2001, Kronstadt F2004, Roelfs F2007 and Ónavas F2009. As a result of the selection, evaluation and purification of advanced materials from the bread wheat breeding program of the International Center for Maize and Wheat (CIMMYT), in 2009 the Wheat Breeding Program from Campo Experimental Norman E. Borlaug (CENEB) belonging to the Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícolas y Pecuarias (INIFAP), released the variety of bread wheat Tepahui F2009. In its genealogy this variety has as parent wild wheat (Aegilops squarrosa or Triticum squarrosa) which confers tolerance to drought (Cox, 1999). Tepahui F2009 has resistance to leafand strip rust prevailing in Mexico, and is moderately resistant to Ug99 isolation of the causal agent of stem rust (Chávez et al, 2011). During grain yield evaluations in experimental plots established in CENEB during the 2007- 2008 to 2009- 2010 cycles, Tepahui F2009 and Kronstadt F2004 as check averaged 6.35 and 6.15 t ha-1 respectively. Under restricted irrigation, Tepahui produced 350kg ha-1 more than check Kronstadt F2004.
