This article offers an introduction to Jacques Maritain’s relation to some of the key drafters of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. First, we will describe the marginal role of Maritain in the drafting process; then, we will explain some of the French philosopher’s encounters with the most important drafters of this historical document. The aim of this paper is to introduce the ways in which J. Maritain might have influenced the writing process of the Declaration and its definitive presentation.
