Water security is defined as ensuring adequate water quality and quantity for various uses at affordable prices and equitably, as well as protecting persons and property against extreme hydrometeorological phenomena. Great challenges exist for water security in the immediate future, including water scarcity, pollution of water bodies, social unrest and conflicts, and environmental degradation. The main driving forces of this process are population growth, urbanization, an increasing demand for energy and food, climate change and poor water management. This paper analyzes trends in these processes in Mexico and the world, highlights key characteristics and recommends that addressing these challenges be made a priority in order to achieve water security. An urgent need for water reform in Mexico is proposed as an indispensable condition for achieving water security in the country.
