CANTO-RIOS, Javier de Jesús et al. Hydraulic modeling of a tubular ring section electrocoagulation reactor. Tecnol. cienc. agua [online]. 2017, vol.8, n.3, pp.111-126. ISSN 2007-2422.  https://doi.org/10.24850/j-tyca-2017-03-07.

Electrocoagulation is an option in the removal of contaminants present in water, based on the wear of electrodes for the in situ formation of a coagulant. In the efficiency of this type of systems are involved physicochemical, electrochemical and hydraulic processes. Several authors have studied this technology since the first two approaches, however, little is known of the influence of hydraulics on the efficiency of the process. The present work focuses on the study of the total charge losses in an electrocoagulation reactor with pressure flow and single and multiple annular cross section, where the latter characteristic depends on the electrode array. It is presented the analysis of the head losses by shear and accessories, which were modeled using different empirical expressions and were compared with the measurements made at semi-pilot scale. As a result of the analysis it was observed that the Bahramir, Yovanovich and Culham (2006) equation resembles the actual losses in multiple annular sections, whereas the expression proposed by Davis better describes the single annular section. These results will allow us to have tools to design real-scale electrocoagulation reactors.

Palavras-chave : Electrocoagulation; modeling hydraulic head loss; annular section.
