SANCHEZ MEJIA, Cristina. Monstrous spaces: refigurations of horror in two short stories by María Fernanda Ampuero. Valenciana [online]. 2023, vol.16, n.31, pp.105-125.  Epub 28-Abr-2023. ISSN 2007-2538.  https://doi.org/10.15174/rv.v15i31.612.

This article analyzes the short stories “Monstruos” and “Subasta” by María Fernanda Ampuero as exponents of the Terror genre. On the one hand, emphasis is placed on the use of literary Gothic topics, as well as on the intertextual references that point to contemporary Horror Cinema. On the other hand, the process of adaptation to the Latin American context is explained from the perspective of female characters determined by gender, class and age. The conclusion is that the narrative of Ampuero elaborates a cross between Literary Gothic and contemporary Horror Cinema to present a terrifying fiction familiar to the Hispanic-American reader, both for the use of textual strategies that characterize the aforementioned traditions and for the hyperbolized representation of current social problems in Latin America.
