From analytical results of illustrative examples and reports of observed characteristics, it is shown that solid slabs of reinforced concrete for housing are not properly designed and constructed in the ambit or the zone of study, which explains the high percentages of service failures observed. Considering three possible sceneries for corrosion of the reinforcing steel the reliability index for six cases are reported, the results show high failure risk or significant maintenance inversions. It is concluded that for the correct design of solid slabs it is necessary not only the revision of flexure strength but also and mainly the control of vertical deformations, cracking due to shrinkage and permeability which implies the specification of a dense and durable concrete. Practical recommendations are presented.
