PEREZ-PEREZ, Yanet; NAVA-NAVARRO, Vianet; BAEZ-HERNANDEZ, Francisco Javier  e  MORALES-NIETO, Arelia. Relationship of knowledge about human papillomavirus with condom use in indigenous university students. Horiz. sanitario [online]. 2021, vol.20, n.2, pp.189-196.  Epub 30-Ago-2021. ISSN 2007-7459.  https://doi.org/10.19136/hs.a20n2.3927.

Objective:

To determine the relationship of knowledge about human papillomavirus with condom use in indigenous university students.

Materials and methods:

Descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study; Through stratified random sampling, indigenous university students, both sexes, were selected. A personal data card, an instrument to measure knowledge about human papillomavirus and the inconvenience subscale for condom use with a heterosexual affective partner, validated and used in Mexican population in previous research, was applied.

Results:

205 indigenous university students from seven educational programs participated, ages ranged from 18 to 29 years ( x -= 20.19, SD = 1.96), women predominated with 53.7% participation, most were single (95.4%). Men started sexual life before women and the number of couples is greater in them. When correlating the variable of knowledge about human papillomavirus with the perceived barriers or inconveniences for condom use, a negative correlation was found, with a low effect size, but statistically significant (r = -. 177, p <.05).

Conclusions:

Knowledge about the human papillomavirus is related to the perceived barriers or inconveniences for the use of condoms in indigenous university students.
