One of the most important factors in the training of new researchers is to develop a research culture that is acquired through the transmission of knowledge and values for the practice of this activity. The purpose of this paper was to explore to what extent a research culture was developed in students in an online master's program in the area of education, compared to a face-to-face program. To this purpose, an investigation was carried out with a mixed methodology in two sequential phases. First, a set of instruments was used to compare the values, knowledge and practices that characterize the research culture, based on a convenience sample of students from two master's programs in education taught by private higher education institutions in Mexico, one online, and one face-to-face. Subsequently, semi-structured ethnographic interviews and a text analysis of a sample of thesis projects in the online program were carried out to identify factors that facilitate the development of a research culture in the online program. The results of this study indicate that in general, the students of the face-to-face program developed a greater research culture than the students of the online program, but evidence was found that, in the online program, when there is a close interaction with the professors and the opportunity for hands-on research activities, this facilitates the proper development of a research culture.
