ENCINAS AGUIRRE, Miguel Angel; OCHOA LANDIN, Lucas  e  RIO SALAS, Rafael Del. El Volcán, a Magmatic Iron Deposit in NW Mexico: Distribution and General Characteristics. Epistemus (Sonora) [online]. 2022, vol.16, n.32, 07.  Epub 23-Set-2022. ISSN 2007-8196.  https://doi.org/10.36790/epistemus.v16i32.211.

The majority of iron deposits in Sonora are associated with skarn zones and/or replacements related to intrusive bodies of granodiorite-quartz monzonite compositions, not greater than 5 Mt and grades less than 50% total Fe. Unlike these deposits, there is the presence of iron deposits whose geological characteristics, alteration-mineralization styles and tectonic context, seem to be associated with magmatic processes, which can be classified as IOCG deposits of the iron-apatite type. A typical example of this type is El Volcán, a deposit of ~ 24 Mt of Fe, with an average grade of 40 to 60% Fe. This type of mineral deposit could extend to the western side of Mexico, which represents new opportunities for exploration of this type of deposits.
