CHIN COLLI, Ricardo del Carmen et al. Selection indices for the productive improvement of braunvieh catttle in Mexico. Ecosistemas y recur. agropecuarios [online]. 2016, vol.3, n.7, pp.1-9. ISSN 2007-901X.
Selection indices were derived in order to improve the production of beef from Braunvieh cattle considering their birth weight (BW), adjusted weaning weight at 240 d (WW240) and at one year of age, the age at first calving (AFC9B) and calving interval (Cl); relative economic values and genetic parameters were also derived. The animal model included the contemporary group, direct additive, maternal additive, permanent environmental and error effects; in addition to the covariate age of the cow at calving. 15 selection indices with restrictions on genetic change, birth weight, age at first birth or both, and others without restrictions were formulated using the different groups of calculated economic values. Within the first group of economic values, the accuracy of the selection indices without restrictions varied from 0.342 to 0.464, and with restrictions from 0.192 to 0.717. Whereas within the second group of economic values, the accuracy of the indices without restrictions varied from 0.516 to 0.602, and with restrictions from 0.351 to 0.635. There is no observed genetic deterioration for reproduction characteristics, even though they are not included in the selection criteria. Reproduction characteristics seem to be of secondary importance in the selection of beef cattle, after growth characteristics.
