Salinity is one of the abiotic factors limiting the production. The objectives of this research were to determine the response of S1 lines of two maize populations to conditions to salinity stress and their relationship to grain yield. The genetic material consisted of 100 S1 Lines which were subjected to stress evaluation with and without salinity in laboratory and greenhouse, and the assessment of grain yield performance. The germination percentage (GERM) was determined in the laboratory; in the greenhouse and laboratory, dry root weight (PSR) and dry stem weight (PSV). In laboratory, a 72.1% decrease in the response was found in GERM, and 40.1 and 44.1% for PSR and PSV, respectively; in the greenhouse only PSV followed the pattern of response to stress conditions, with a decrease of 33.0%. PSR and PSV under stress in the greenhouse (PSR_EI and PSV_EI) positively correlated with PSV_NL with values of r = 0.282** and r = 0.185, respectively. The PSR and PSV under normal conditions in the greenhouse (PSR_NI and PSV_NI) positively correlated with the grain yield with values of r = 0.250* and r = 0.237*, respectively. Genetic variation was found between S1 lines in the characters studied, including grain yield. The dry root weight (PSR) and stem weight (PSV) determined under normal and stress conditions in greenhouse trials are considered potential attributes trials for early selection of maize genotypes.
