Resumo

Objective:
To analyze socioeconomic development and environmental sustainability in the 36 urban municipalities of the Northwest region in Mexico.
Methodology:
The Municipal Socio-Economic Development Index (IDSEM) and the Environmental Sustainability Index (ISAM) were created using the statistical technique of the principal component factor analysis, based on data corresponding to the year 2015 from INEGI, Semarnat, Coneval, among others.
Results:
22 municipalities presented high and very high IDSEM, representing 90.65 % of the population. Regarding ISAM, it was found that there are 17 municipalities in a high and very high stratum, representing 50 % of the population.
Limitations:
ISAM was calculated using the limited environmental information existing at the municipal level.
Conclusions:
Regarding the relationship between IDSEM and ISAM, it was found that of a total 36 municipalities, 15 coincide with both rates between high and very high, representing 85.57 % of the population. It is observed that there are five municipalities to which the development and sustainability efforts should focus and guide. They represent 3.13 % of the population.
