BARRERA-ROJAS, Miguel Ángel. Abandonment of Exclusive Breastfeeding (LME) in working mothers in the tourism sector in Riviera Maya, Mexico. Estud. soc. Rev. aliment. contemp. desarro. reg. [online]. 2023, vol.33, n.62, e231356. Epub 03-Jun-2024. ISSN 2395-9169. https://doi.org/10.24836/es.v33i62.1356.
Objective of this work is to investigate the main factors that condition and undermine Exclusive Breastfeeding (EBF) in a region with a productive vocation oriented towards tourism: the Riviera Maya of Quintana Roo, Mexico.
Methods:
An exploratory and descriptive study was carried out on the abandonment of exclusive breastfeeding in women who work in the tourism sector of Riviera Maya, Mexico. A continuous collection questionnaire was applied to find out the conditions and contexts that prevent them from exclusively breastfeeding their children at work.
Results:
Among the main findings, three factors were found that violate breastfeeding: the flexibility of work prevents women from having access to maternity leave; the null existence of lactation workers in the work centers; the distance between the urban centers of the Riviera Maya and the tourist centers is quite considerable in terms of time and money.
Limitations:
The study only considers a limited portion of the population of the state of Quintana Roo
Conclusions:
It is necessary to consider these contexts to adjust Mexican legislation on EBF at work.
