PITA PICO, Roger. From School Girls to Mothers and Wives: Restrictions on Female Education in Colombia during the Early Republican Life, 1820-1828. Rev. interdiscip. estud. género Col. Méx. [online]. 2017, vol.3, n.5, pp.22-56. ISSN 2395-9185. https://doi.org/10.24201/eg.v3i5.100.
This paper discusses obstacles of the nascent republican government to implement an educational system that included women. Advances were too few to overcome the segregationist mentality and differences in education that had prevailed during the Hispanic period domain. So then, the republican principles of equality and freedom were not reflected in educational policy that was affected by the economic crisis, the fiscal deficit and the ravages of the wars of Independence. Therefore, members of the female gender remained under the influence of the Church and Catholic morality, and continued to develop their role as mothers and wives within the family. Finally, the full exercise of their rights as citizens was postponed, thus their opportunities for personal development, recognition and socio-economic ascent were also limited.
