BUSTAMANTE-SILVA, Ludwigvan A. et al. Use of intraoperative endoscopy in digestive anastomoses. Endoscopia [online]. 2021, vol.33, n.4, pp.127-132.  Epub 31-Out-2022. ISSN 2444-6483.  https://doi.org/10.24875/end.21000043.

The first time the use of intraoperative endoscopy was described was in 1973 by Espiner et al, who used intraoperative colonoscopy in order to locate all polyps of the colon and rectum during an open polypectomy by colotomy. At 1994 was the first time when the technique of intraoperative endoscopy was applied to review an digestive tract anastomosis when Wittgrove et al. described a group in whom gastric bypass surgery with Roux-en-Y reconstruction (RYGB) was performed. Initially, surgeons feared for the integrity of the staple line in the newly made anastomosis by subjecting it to increased pressure during the endoscopic study, however, currently we have enough evidence to show that it is not a risky procedure to perform. In the last two decades, multiple studies have appeared in which transoperative endoscopy was used in surgeries involving digestive anastomosis, most of them with mechanical anastomosis and in almost all cases with encouraging results.
