Leonardo was a great observer of natural phenomena, emotions, mechanisms and the beauty of forms. His whole life was devoted to capture his emotions and experiences in the paintings and in the thousands of pages that form the codices. He had among his primary challenges to understand the inseparable phenomenon of light and shadows, since if he understood how they were governed in nature, then he could achieve the greatest realism in painting. In this article are exposed and founded some of his contributions in the work of the shadows; fundamental results of his proposal of the book of light and shadows contained in the Painting treaty will be shown; mainly those in which he showed more interest, such as those of illuminated bodies through windows, will be exposed. It will often be pointed out how Leonardo is perceived to pass from a geometry of the discrete to another of the continuous and although he does not state it that way, this work shows why it is relevant in his treatment of shadow geometry.
