LUNA SANTIAGO, Germán. The Papantla Riot of 1767: A Historical and Legal Analysis. Hist. mex. [online]. 2017, vol.67, n.1, pp.125-168. ISSN 2448-6531.  https://doi.org/10.24201/hm.v67i1.3442.

In October 1767, a riot shook Papantla, an indigenous town in the viceroyalty of New Spain. This article analyzes the event on the broader stage of power structures, arguing that the riot was politically legitimate as it was based on the notion of law as guaranteed by the king. Other authors have emphasized the immediate causes of the riot but have overlooked the role of law. In the author’s opinion, the riot was a manifestation of the Hispanic political order as regulated by law.

Palavras-chave : Papantla Riot; indigenous towns.
