TORMO CAMALLONGA, Carlos. From the Habsburgs to the Bourbons: Legists and Canonists at the Royal University of Mexico. Hist. mex. [online]. 2020, vol.70, n.2, pp.645-683.  Epub 20-Jan-2021. ISSN 2448-6531.  https://doi.org/10.24201/hm.v70i2.4165.

Throughout the colonial period, the University of Mexico was primarily canonist in terms of the preferences of its law students. Nevertheless, as this article shows, in the transition from the 17th to the 18th Century, a difference or particularity can be seen in which references to laws begin to outnumber references to canons on certain points. The chronology of this singularity coincides with political changes seen with the naming of new authorities in New Spain, especially in the Royal Audience. This article aims to approach the causal relationship that could have existed between these two realities, questioning some possible interpretations.
