The paper develops at historical level the way in which the economy approached the concept of "happiness" at first and how it became "utility". The essay is a theoretical discussion, then the ideas of authors that gave form to the homo economicus model, the maximizing, selfish agent, that can choose the optimal level of consumption, are considered; subsequently, complementary proposals to the study of happiness from the economy are reviewed; the relevance of the others, the changing preferences, as well as the cardinal and comparable element between the levels of utility of the individuals.
