Dear readers, authors and friends of Veterinaria México OA,

With this issue, Veterinaria México OA celebrates its first year as an online-only, open access publication. These have been 12 months of challenging, but also very gratifying, work for the journal's team.

I would like to present a summary of the journal's activity during this time. Figures 1 and 2 represent an overview of the number of articles received -published and rejected- through the month of September 2015.

The total number of articles received from October 2013 to September 2015 was 53. Of these, 13 (24.5%) were accepted for publication and 31 (58.5%) rejected; the remaining articles are in process.

What are the reasons for rejection? Manuscripts are immediately rejected if they are sent in Spanish or if the subject matter is not covered in the journal. If an article is sent from a non-Spanish speaking country, the inability to translate the article into Spanish -once accepted for publication- is also cause for rejection. The main reasons for rejection before peer review are poor quality of writing, insufficiently detailed methodology, inadequate statistical analysis of the data, and the lack of approval by a relevant body for conducting research with animals. After the peer-review process, 13 articles were rejected: one for plagiarism, four because the authors did not comply with the necessary revisions, one was not approved after the second revision, and the remaining articles had unfavorable peer reviews. All but two of these rejections occurred in 2014.

The journal's audience overwhelmingly comes from Mexico, at least for the time being. Between July 2014 and September 2015, Veterinaria México OA's website received 27,818 visits. Figure 3 shows the total number of visits from other countries for that same period.

Lastly, I would like to pay tribute to the members of the Editorial Board for their invaluable contribution to the journal. Through their commitment, dedication and knowledge they have bettered and enriched the articles published to date in Veterinaria México OA. I am deeply grateful to them.

Thus, with enthusiasm and determination another year of work begins. Thank you for reading Veterinaria México OA, for sending us your manuscripts and for your support.
