In recent years, a growing interest has emerged to verify which paradigm better explains the profit-structure relationship in the Mexican banking industry: market power or efficiency. To test these two paradigms, this work constructs specific indicators of cost efficiency based on the efficiency frontier concept. This is done in order to incorporate these indicators into the traditional profit-structure test. In contrast to previous studies, this study finds empirical evidence in favor of the market power hypothesis only.
