ROSALES LOAEZA, Eduardo Yolotl e IBANEZ CERDA, Sergio. Beneficiaries Introduced by the Prepositions Por and Para in Mexican Spanish. Anu. let. lingüíst. filol. [online]. 2024, vol.12, n.1, pp.37-72. Epub 27-Maio-2024. ISSN 2448-8224. https://doi.org/10.19130/iifl.adel.2024.12.1/002x079s042.
Research on Spanish benefactive constructions examines mostly one type of beneficiary: the one acting as a potential recipient. However, some studies, including Van Valin and LaPolla (1997), Smith (2005, 2010), and Kitillä and Zúñiga (2010), argue that benefaction can be expressed in different ways, depending on the involvement of the positively affected participant in the event described in the sentence. Following this idea, we analyze various types of benefaction in Spanish, particularly those where the beneficiaries are coded in phrases introduced by the prepositions por and para. We employ the taxonomy proposed by Van Valin and LaPolla (1997), which classifies beneficiaries into three types: the recipient, the deputative, and the plain beneficiary. Analysis of our sample shows the presence of all three types. Their use is related to specific semantic and syntactic factors, such as the preposition that introduces them (either por or para or both), the verbal valency of the clause nucleus and its semantic class, and the concrete or abstract attribute of the second arguments of bivalent and trivalent verbs.
