The article analyses the power relations and the strategies employed by the temporal and spiritual authorities, taking, as a framework, the recursos de fuerza introduced before the Audiencia de Nueva Galicia by royal authorities in the Sierra de Sinaloa. Ecclesiastical immunity is presented as a strategy of spiritual authorities to resist the power of royal officials; similarly, the temporal authorities used the recurso de fuerza as a mechanism against power. Beyond curbing abuses of ecclesiastical power against laymen, it was also used by members of the clergy, whether secular or regular to request monarchical support against their abuses.
